
The town of Akureyri, with its population of approximately 17,000 Inhabitants, is the administrative, transportation and commercial centre of North Iceland. Akureyri lies at the very end of the Eyjafjordur fjord and cruise passengers experience a wonderfully scenic entry into the port along this 60 km fjord.
Akureyri provides the surrounding rural communities in these high latitudes with sundry services as well as educational and industrial facilities. Akureyri has its own theatre, symphony orchestra, University and one of the biggest hospitals in the country that also serves the Eastern part of Greenland. Akureyri has proven to be a firm favourite with cruise passengers with around 70% of passengers participating in shore excursions from this port.
