Djúpivogur is a typical, small Icelandic fishing village located on the east cost of Iceland with approximately 450 inhabitants. Irish monks and hermits are known to have taken up residence on the tiny island of Papey long before Iceland's documented 9th century settlement, and many ancient artefacts have been found at various archaeological digs in the area. The history of Djupivogur is inextricably linked to the history of Iceland's trade and spans more than 400 years. Fishing has always been important to the Djúpivogur area. Today, the fishing industry is still the main source of employment in the village - however, tourism has increased rapidly in recent years. One of Iceland's most beautiful mountains, the 1069m symmetric "pyramid" Búlandstindur stands guard over the town and is the proud symbol of the Djúpivogur region.
